100% Linen - Toile À La Mode ~ Oasis Black and Pink

  • 137cm wide
  • French Flax Linen
  • approx. 170-175gsm

A little background . . .

Whilst variations of what we know as a toile print began in Ireland in the 18th Century, it was the textile factory in Jouy-en-Jonas Paris (1760) that became the major producer and brought renown to this style of fabric print.  The themes of the traditional French designs varied from the 18th to 19th centuries, following, or indeed anticipating, fashion. From pastoral scenes, florals, Neoclassical, and romanticised depictions of foreign lands, to representations of people at work and in the built environment, the Toile print is often considered a narrative to be 'read'.

The Oasis Designs in the Cloth Edit collection depicts a romanticised view of Egypt. The animals have been placed in an environment from which they had probably been long extinct. The scene could actually be Asian, albeit with the Asian elephant being replaced by the distinct African elephant. The architecture and vegetation could be in any number of places: from the Nile to the Ganges.

Historically the colours of Toile de Jouy prints have been Persian Blue, Red, Black and Navy.  This unique combination of Black and Pink is fantastic.  It has a very designer 'look', and I think it's a little more interesting than Dior's soft grey prints.  Explore classic shapes of the shirt dress or fit and flare, or bring something modern to your make for a brilliant juxtaposition.  Play around with contrasting separates (or contrasting cuffs, plackets etc. I hope this print inspires you.

It is another extraordinary print for the Cloth Edit '22/'23 Spring Summer linen collection.  It's a beautiful light weight cloth.

For your cloth edit consider:  semi-fitted or looser shirts, blouses, tops and tunics; dresses (eg. wrap, fit and flare, tunic, shirt dresses); skirts (eg. wrap, midi, gathered, pleated).  It would be great in pants or shorts in summer also.

      Cloth Care
We recommend a gentle machine wash or hand washing linen. It is important not to wring the fabric or garment, so if you are handwashing, roll up in a towel to press out excess water. To ensure the long life of a garment, don’t tumble dry as this breaks down the fibres. If you do tumble dry the cloth, then do so on a cooler setting. It is preferable to wash inside out. Wash colours separately. Shake out the wet garment and dry flat (or on a hanger) in the shade. Use a warm/hot iron and spot test. You may need a water spray bottle to get rid of the wrinkles when you are ironing, or just embrace the beautiful crumpled look of the cloth ;-). Linen softens upon wearing and laundering.
