About the Gaza Dress

The Gaza dress pattern is an exact duplicate of the garment worn for centuries by village women in Gaza.  It is a loose fitting, ankle-length gown with long sleeves, slightly narrowed at the wrists, three side panels on each side, shoulder and front yokes, and a front split opening.

Two optional embroidery designs are included for the front yoke, as well as suggests for other authentic decoration.

The pattern is printed on high quality white tissue paper, and contained in a generously sized zip-lock bag.   There is plenty of room for your traced pattern and needlework notions in the bag also.

The Fabric

The Gaza Dress can be made in a range of fabrics, such as light weight denim and wool, broadcloth, muslin, and linen.  The traditional colours are black, indigo, white, or natural, and this provides the 'canvas' for the needlework.

The pattern is both a thoughtful study of this unique garment, but also enables the maker to add their personalised touch through fabric choice, and the colour and thread selections used in the embroidery.

The Cloth Edit also suggests that in other iterations you consider using a bold print in lieu of adding embellishments.  Silks and Rayon/Viscose would make for a beautiful and cool summer dress, that would not be out of place on the beach or a party.

The Notions

  • 18" (46cm) of  #10 waste Canvas or Penelope canvas (10 holes per square inch or 2.5cm)
  • Note: do not purchase mono canvas.
  • #20 or smaller crewel needle
  • Embroidery thread (it is advisable to read the embroidery pattern before purchasing you embroidery supplies.  As an initial guide though, if you were to do option 1 (H1) in one colour you would need: 6 skeins of #5 perle cotton, or 18 skeins of 6 stranded cotton floss.  If you did option 2 (H2) in one colour you would need: 11 skeins of 6 stranded cotton floss, or 100 yards of 1 or 2ply Persian crewel wool.
  • NOTE: if you embroider the yoke using a range of colours (suggestions are included in the pattern) you will need more than the aforementioned quantities.  Some 'Areas', for example, require 2 skeins of perle cotton, while some 'Areas' need a small portion of a skein.

Sizing

The Gaza dress pattern comes in one size only, which covers women's sizes 6-18.  There are no finished garment measurements on the pattern, although the width of the lower edge of the dress measures 160cm (based on the length for someone 163cm tall)

Level of Difficulty

There is no specific level of difficulty noted on the pattern, but the construction of the Gaza dress is straight forward.  The only challenging bit may be turning the yoke to the outside of the dress and slip stitching it down.   The additional required steps of attaching of preparing the embroidery fabric (scrim) are also in the instructions.
