About the Old Mexico Dress

This 16th-century Spanish colonial style was prevalent through subsequent centuries in central and northern Mexico as a blouse. It later enjoyed wider popularity as a dress-length in the mid-to-late 20th century.

It is quick and easy to make, with just four pattern pieces. You can wear it as a below-knee dress or a top-of-the-thigh blouse, but it is simple to lengthen and shorten as desired.

The traditional blouse was hand embroidered on the yoke, sleeves, and front with brilliantly coloured floral designs.  Whether you add some hand (or machine) embroidery, the dress is a beautiful canvas for your creative expression.  The pattern includes interesting historical notes, and hints for resources for the additional embellishments you may like to include on your garment.

Note: This pattern does NOT include any embroidery patterns or motifs.  If you would like to purchase an embroidery pattern to go with this pattern, go to the Folkwear website.  The embroidery pattern is downloadable.

The pattern is printed on high quality white tissue paper, and contained in a generously sized zip-lock bag.   There is plenty of room for your traced pattern and needlework notions in the bag also.

The Fabric

Make your Old Mexico Dress in woven cottons and cotton blends, such as muslin, shirting, batiste and voile (for breezy, airy summer looks), damask, chambray, lightweight denim, rayon/viscose, lightweight linen and linen blends, silks and silk blends.

The Notions

If you are embroidering your Old Mexico Dress, you will need to purchase a suitable stabiliser or backing to support the fabric while you complete the embroidery stitching.

Sizing

The Old Mexico Dress is a multi-sized patterns including sizes XS - 3XL ( bust 30 1/2" [78 cm] to 54" [137cm]).

Level of Difficulty

There is no specified level of difficultly on the pattern, but is a simple construction with only four pattern pieces.
