About 'Toile de Jouy'

Variations of 'toile print' began in 18th Century Ireland, but it was the textile factory in Jouy-en-Jonas Paris (1760) that became the major producer and brought renown to the design style. The themes of the traditional French designs were pastoral scenes, florals, Neoclassical and romanticised depictions of foreign lands, and representations of people at work and in the built environment.

One design house of international acclaim played with Toile de Jouy a few years ago and indeed continues to play with the design in classic tote bags.

Cloth Edit’s Exclusive 'Toile de Jouy' Linen Silks
The 'Safari' design of Cloth Edit’s two Linen Silk Toile prints echo popular Toile prints that depicted flora and fauna scenes from India. You will see leopards, tigers, various trees, a waterway, and hills.  As a 'nod' to the pastoral scenes of the past, you will also see a little fence.  Historically Toile prints had a white background, and the print was in Blue, Red, Black or Navy.  The two Cloth Edit REVERSE Toile prints have saturated, bold backgrounds, with a white 'relief' design.

The Colourways

The 'Bright Blue' REVERSE is a reprint (on linen silk) of the linen Safari design Cloth Edit had years ago.   You might call it a Colbalt (but it is a lighter [tint] of the cobalt in the 'Floral Hero' Cobalt and Green Tea Linen Silk design).

The 'Forest Green' REVERSE is completely new.  Cloth Edit has a lot of green-loving customers, and this hue is so unique.  It's a warmer forest green (and heading towards the colour of Sicilian olives).  For reference it's in the same family as the Green Tea of the 'Floral Hero' print; it's darker though.

The Bright Blue and Forest Green colours go well together.  They also both look great with bright or pale pinks, pale blue, white, taupe, and classic blue denims.

Why Linen Silk?

This stunning cloth combines all the wonderful features of both linen and silk fibres: excellent breathability; beautiful drape; and cool and smooth against the skin. The amalgam looks and feels more luxurious than linen and opens opportunities for making garments for special events. Don’t keep it just for best though 😉. This is wonderful for wearing every day.

Enjoy using Cloth Edit’s Linen Silk for floaty dresses, blouses, skirts, and wide leg trousers.  Really, it’s perfect for all manner of dresses, tops, bottoms and loungewear. It drapes in soft folds on and away from the body. If lined, more fitted silhouettes are on the table.

The cloth is also great for layering in cooler months as it’s smooth and doesn’t have a lot of ‘friction’ like a range of cottons and linens. The cloth has very good colourfastness and it’s easy to iron.

Cloth Care

  • It’s washable by hand but I always use a delicate, cool, machine wash cycle (my tip - don’t overload the detergent and softeners)
  • Medium Iron (spot test)
  • Steam ironing is perfect
  • Don’t use a dryer.  It is a garment destroyer and will shorten the life of your garment.  It is a quick drying cloth, so just hang your garment on a hanger to dry.
