Folkwear Patterns - Japanese Field Clothing
About the Japanese Field Clothing: the Hippari, the Field Pants, and the Padded Jacket
The Hippari, sized for men and women, the Monpei, or field pants, for women, and Padded Jacket for women, are all included in this pattern. The construction is in the time-honoured way.
- The Hippari is a hip-length jacket that overlaps in front and ties at the side. Its front opening is finished with a neckband. There are two different elbow-length sleeves: for women, a rectangular sleeve with small traditional openings under the arms in both sleeve and body; and for men, the sleeves are tapered, with no underarm opening.
- The calf-length Field Pants have pleats at the waist, below the back and front waistbands that wrap and tie. Roomy gussets at the crotch allow full ease of movement, and the leg hems are finished with elastic. There is a patch pocket on the right front hip.
- The Padded Jacket has a straight front opening and neckband. Construction includes an outer layer, batting, and a short contrasting lining. The curved sleeves (which can also be used, unpadded, on the Hippari), have traditional underarm openings.
CORRECTION NOTE: Folkwear Patterns have corrected the pattern layout for the Hippari and Padded Jacket, and this can be viewed and downloaded on their website.
The pattern is printed on high quality white tissue paper, and contained in a generously sized zip-lock bag. There is plenty of room for your traced pattern and needlework notions in the bag also.
For the Hippari and Field Pants, choose medium-weight, tightly woven materials such as cotton, lightweight denim, or silk. Traditional Japanese fabrics are usually indigo-dyed ikat weave or striped cotton in blue, black, grey, or brown.
For the Padded Jacket, choose light to medium-weight cotton, silk, or rayon/viscose, or lightweight wool. The lining can be made of contrasting print or plain lightweight cotton, silk or rayon/viscose.
For your Field Pants you will need 1 yard (.95cm) of 1/4" (6mm) elastic. If you decide on the optional elastic in the Hippari sleeves, you will need another .5 of a yard (50cm).
The pattern is sized from Women's size Small (bust 32 1/2"- 83cm) to a Men's Extra Large (Chest 48" - 122cm)
Level of Difficulty
There is no specific level of difficulty stated on the pattern, but the construction is straight forward, even though aspects of these garments may be new to you, and the instructions are clear.
