('Fagoting') Ladder Lace

Traditionally, fagoting is joining two pieces of fabric with a series of stitches, creating a delicate, 'openwork' lace pattern.  This ladder trim allows you to achieve the same kind of effect by sewing fabric on either side of the trim (right up to the 'ladder').  You'll see designers use this, notably in tiered skirts and sleeves.  Don't think you need to use this with white fabrics.  You'll see white fagoting used alongside a huge array of colours and styles of prints.
